I expected this film to be a lot more ennuyeux than it was in the end. Still, I somehow felt like it didn’t do justice to Coco Chanel’s life. At times, it was more like watching a Rosamunde Pilcher adaptation instead of a biopic about a strong, creative and also controversial woman. I’d love to see a film that covered her entire life, with a script that offered more to its leading actress.
An atmospheric and elegant film. Audrey Tautou is as captivating as always but in this radiates real strength.
Commercially elaborated, that's for sure. I still have a thing for Audrey Tautou, I somewhat enjoyed it.
what a disappointment. this film appears to badly want to be 'la vie en rose'. tautou puts in another brilliant turn, confirming her place as one of the worlds best. yet Fontaine got this very badly wrong. the story deserves better than this, coco chanel deserves better than this, which is just another hollywood-lite picture oversentamentalised till any semblance of emotional intensity is dead.
This is the kind of sentimental "chick flick" that doesn't do any favors for women in cinema. It's a competent but unremarkable effort that drifts from scene to scene without much introspection. Why not explore the odd dichotomy of a fiercely independent woman whose success depended heavily on the patronage of wealthy men? Only Tautou's presence and the gorgeous clothes recreated by C. Leterrier kept my interest.
For the record, I'm only giving this a 4/5 stars because I can't give it a 3.5. It was alright. Incredibly well made, but so uninteresting as well. I think I may go back... 3 stars sounds better!
Charming at times, but never touching or daring. Audrey did a fine job, but the director turned a helluva story into some hollywood-esque mash of scenes. Meh
Nice, yet the painfully obvious narrative techniques keep it from being remarkable.
I see lots of similarity between this movie with Cottilard's La Vie en Rose, but somehow I still prefer Cottilard's.. Tautou did a good job as usual but I need more than good, I need a great one. The story will be so much better if they focus on the career not the love story which I think is not that special.
I get that Chanel is known for her minimalism during her day and age, but the dresses she designed in the movie were just not appealing. Reminded me more of minimalist Jil Sander rather than decadent Chanel. It's quite ironic that Chanel is now perceived as a more over-the-top brand whereas Coco thought differently.
Coco Before Chanel has the charm and grace as an Audrey Hepburn movie and that makes it perfect Oscar bait
I expected more out of that film. I’d say weakly retold story of Chanel's life. Nothing new but it might be interesting for a person who knows nothing about Chanel. I did not feel her real passion, hard work and dedication – yes, but not passion. Very average performance of Audrey Tautou, we saw her in better roles. The big plus is for soundtrack.
