Synopsis

In La comunidad (the name of a middle-class apartment complex), Julia (Carmen Maura) is a real estate agent who enrages her new neighbors when she moves in on their plans to extract hidden riches from the apartment of a fellow tenant who’s just died. Little does she know that the oddly menacing residents of the building know well of the elusive treasure, and have been scheming for years and building their dreams around acquiring the formerly well-guarded winnings. The greedy obsessions of all in question spiral unhinged into a frenzy of desperation. A tale of madness with a clear and witty homage to Hitchcock by flamboyant Spanish director Álex de la Iglesia.

Original

Álex de la Iglesia

Álex de la Iglesia was born in Bilbao, Spain in 1965. He is a philosophy graduate from the University of Deusto who ended up working in the comic book field at a young age. He had a brief stint in television before finding work as production designer on Pablo Berger’s Mamá. This little seen short film focuses on a family forced to live in a basement after a nuclear war and features a little boy who wears a Batman costume.

Enrique Urbizu came calling for his production designer services in 1991 for Todo por la pasta (Anything For Bread) a Basque crime thriller which was nominated for 4 Goya Awards, and won 1 (best supporting actress). A good film to get De La Iglesia noticed.

He then met José Guerricaechevarria and together they made the short film, Mirindas Asesinas (1991), in which a boring man, whose mind is gradually degenerating, is on the verge of becoming a psychotic killer. The two men became fast friends and have worked together ever… read more

This film (thanks to the efforts of a friend from Argentina) introduced me to the wonderful films of Álex de la Iglesia, and it's as good a place to start as any in his work. This film is kind of like Sam Raimi's A Simple Plan played on a much larger scale, and for laughs. A fatuous remark, admittedly, but watch the film; you'll see what I mean.

Along with "El dia de la bestia" this is De la Iglesia's best work. a mad, bloody film about greedy murderous neighbors. but warning, you may either hate its absurdity or simply die of laughter.
