This is the only film I've ever liked him in... so in a way, I can agree with you. haha.
Was haunted by this film for years since I saw it as a kid. I saw a second time and I understand the reason for such enthusiasm. This is a brilliant film, finely written and cinematographically compelling. It also features the cute young face of Jena Malone as young-Ellie Arroway... Jena who is now so beautiful.
Wondering if I should see this again? saw it when I was 15 and found it boring... Wonder if I'd have a greater appreciation now that I'm 15 and a half....
The things this pop corn movie was trying to say, and the way they were being said, seemed very superficial. Party because of the unconvinving "christian philosopher" played by straight-from-the-plastic-model-factory Mcconaughey. His character just couldn't bridge the world views between stereotypical religious morons and the female Sagan, the scientist. I suspect this compromising aspect is in the book aswell.
Amazing cinematography, acting, and everything else. I enjoyed it a lot. Jodie Foster is amazing, both in this, as an actress, and as a person.
I can watch this movie over and over and never get tired of it; there's just so much in it that I like, and I see something "new" every time I view it.
Great performance by Jodie Foster! Some amazing cinematic moments and an overall profound message to the film.
terrific music and work from jodie foster, probably one of the only films ive liked her in other than taxi driver. some slightly campy moments but worth it for the ending and score.
First time I've seen this since back when it came out. I remembered loving it back then. I love it even more now. What a beautiful and profound film.
Some bad moments in this films but to me they don't ruin the incredible experience of watching the film in a theater...
When Jodie's character sees the bright, dreamy Milky Way galaxy from an outside vantage point in space, she sees God, she sees beauty, she sees her finitude, and she can barely speak. I imagine you won't have much to say either. A fantastic cinematic moment you don't want to miss. See the movie for this scene alone.
I second that comment about McConaughey. I grew up with Carl Sagan's book close to my heart. So I wasn't happy when I heard about the liberties the filmmakers were taking with McC's Palmer Joss character. However, all in all, it is reasonably faithful to the book. The dedication to Sagan in the credits was nice to see.
would have been a hell of a lot better without fucking matthew mcconaughey in it. :)
