Finite storytelling. Anton Corbijn assuredly masters the visual dramatization of Ian Curtis’ tragedy with simplistic neo-realism. He also assumes a documentarian role, allowing for some beautifully honest artistry to take form, especially in the actors, who collectively feel very grounded. Sam Riley gives a quietly visceral performance as he traverses a desert of human emotions. Accompanying him is Samantha Morton, whose fragility is more obvious, but just as strongly portrayed. At times the film becomes so muted, the compositions so static, that when we arrive on stage with Joy Division’s raw energy, the viewing experience is completely transformed. Marvelous filmmmaking, one of the best biopics there is.
