a chain gang is not fun and carefree!
Tells the stations of the cross of Luke who gains an undeniable Christian stature at the end of the road. You may have some fun by counting the blatant and the less obvious allusions to the Life of Jesus left by the screenwriters here. Academy award (well deserved) earned by George Kennedy in the Best Actor in a Supporting Role category. Masterpiece.
The moral of the story: Prison is pretty fun and carefree until you start trying to escape from it!
But playing poker, having egg-eating contests, and watching ridiculous women wash cars is!
Superior storytelling and Paul Newman make this movie. Personality goes a very long way. I love George Kennedy in it as well.
One of my favorite movies starring Newman (probably not alone in that one). What I like most is the how Newman's character regresses in the movie. This along with his ability to seem like the friend you grew up with down the street and the signature Newman swagger make this a "pretty cool" movie.
I love this film...I mean: Paul Newman is such a talent. Plus, this film really gives you the feel of the old rugged south of the early 20th century. What prison was really like then...and it's a film to represent something in men that I believe they all feel as one...something that speaks to them the way The Hours speaks to someone of either literary torment or specifically same sex orientation and love...
I can relate to Luke: a nonconforming, non-planner who's known to do it the hard way even if it hurts him, furthermore, Paul Newman is one hell of a handsome fellow & it didn't hurt to look at him for 2 hours. This film is full of fine performances & I'm a sucker for southern landscapes, the only component I felt iffy about is how well most the inmates got on. This is prison. Realistically, would they all be buddies?
Easily in my top five favorite's of all time. So good. So so so good. I could go on and on but I dont feel the need. If you haven't seen this you should go back under the rock you crawled from under and just stay there... Or watch it cause its so damn good!
This is actually my favorite movie. There's something wonderful and exciting about the rebelliousness of Luke that I think anyone can identify with. Wonderful performance by Paul Newman that will last the ages.
One of those film classics I should have seen years ago, but just got around to watching now - unfortunately, this one did not quite live up to its reputation. Excellent performances and great moments, but the story is slow and repetitive and just too long. Excellent cinematography by Conrad Hall, and a great score by Lalo Schifrin.
