Bordwell: "Over the top doesn’t capture it. There is, it seems, no longer a top to go over."
Comparisons to Miike, T. Scott, and Verhoeven are all merited. But in its direct provocation and unblinking gaze at the hideous/hilarious, it reminds me most of Miike. Truly radical. Avant-garde is inadequate: this taps into the very fabric of cinema. It's hard to gauge how Neveldine/Taylor feel about humanity, but it cant be good.
Even more unhinged and trashy than the first one. Also more deliberately funny.
Super recomendable.
In aspiring to nothing more than a live-action video game, Crank2 points to the inherent flaw of such a concept. Even if you enjoy playing them, would you really enjoy watching them? I guess I see why people appreciate the film's crude & absurdist Looney Tunes sensibility in which character development & narrative causality are tossed out the window, but I found it grating, obnoxious, & just painful to watch.
I try not to rate films based upon their level of pure high-octane awesome. Crank 2 made itself the exception. I found myself shout "fuck yeah" the whole time.
Surprisingly something special for the way it pushes the tired conventions of the action movie to outrageously absurd extremes. Is it really a good movie? Hard to say, at times the crude obnoxious elements outweigh the clever ones. But at its best moments, it gloriously accomplishes what it sets out to do. Great offbeat score by Mike Patton.
This movie is so fucked. Cant tell if I love it or hate it (which means I probably love it).
I agree with Stevan. This one is just too over the top ridiculous. And stupid.
I thought this was *awesome*, and I have not seen the first one. "Crank: High Voltage" is exhilarating in an entirely inappropriate fashion. It's like an exuberant '30s-'40s era cartoon sifted through a prism of frat boy attitude. For the doubters, if y'all would think about it as a live-action version of a cartoon, it'd make a bit more "sense" and be more enjoyable. It's funny too.
I'm going to disagree with the previous poster. While lacking in plot, the film is clearly made by extremely knowledgeable film geeks, exploiting the action genre for comedic effect. When the film inexplicably switches to Japanese tokusatsu for the "climactic" fight my pants became twin geysers of cream. I love a good genre pastiche film. What I'm trying to say is, the film KNOWS it's stupid, and owns it.
The first word I could think of this movie is (am sorry) stupid. Yes, It has loads of actions, public sex scenes, you may say its immoral, and their consistent in keeping it that way, which is good. What makes me think of the word stupid is simply the meaning of the word itself, lacks of intelligence, in a state of mental numbness especially as resulting from shock.
