I think the film is perpetuating stereotypes as a means of criticizing them, but since this is won over Brokeback Mountain, we'll just ignore that the film is actually not as terrible as most people think it is.
Ironically, even with the ham-fisted message of this film being that racism is bad, this is one of the most racist films I've seen. Criticizing stereotypes while perpetuating them? And this won Best Picture?

Jack Nicholson's face says it all. Worst oscar winner movie ever. Why isn't available to rate half a star?
The film is pretty enjoyable; the acting, the drama, the music, and the cinematography is all spot-on. In terms of being realistic and thought-provoking, I think people exaggerate on that.
Well-meaning and well made, but ultimately patronising and trying sooooo hard to both topical and important. Best bit is Sandra Bullock cast against type.
Acredito que esse filme fala, sobre o bem e o mal, Você pode fazer o bem para alguém, e logo depois para outra pessoa você pode fazer o mal. Grande filme!
After reading the comments on here I realize that I am the only person who loved this film. I personally was very moved by this film and think that it is one of the best movies on racism there is (Do the Right Thing is my favorite). It tackles a subject that is very rarely touched upon and shows society something that it ignores instead of faces. I think this is an important film and a great one.
i thought crash won the oscar because the people too uncomfortable with gays to vote for brokeback; but then i was thinking about 9/11 and tolerance, the american dream, and how people are full of prejudice like the lapd and stuff, but they dont realise everyones equal, everyones a human being, and like wouldn't it be great if we could all just get along? fuck off paul haggis.
This film's depiction of complicated social-racial issues is like being talked down to by an unintelligent and petulant child.

Overwrought and sanctimonious film which, while trying to form a heavy-handed narrative about the evils of racism, manages to come off racist as shit. ★★
i try not to be a "hater." i notice people on this site get off on trashing movies that other people like just to sound sophisticated. there is so much hate and vitriol for movies like "donnie darko" that are totally unwarranted. that being said, i HATED this movie. i am absolutely stunned it got best picture. maybe i need to watch it again and give it another chance but i thought it sucked.
I totally agree on everything you said there. I really disliked this film a lot.
This is one of the most impressive and beautiful films I've seen so far. This is life..
Had to watch this for a Sociology class in community college. I feel like this movie was just a version of Magnolia; but instead of having real characters, they just used simplified hollow shells of characters. They are only remotely interesting because of their race and how they interact with other races. Sentimental. Shitty soundtrack as well. An overall bad job. :(
Strangely, Sandra Bullock is one of the only things I like about this movie, in addition to the Michael Peña storyline. Otherwise, I was incredibly, incredibly disappointed this won Best Picture (I was rooting for Brokeback Mountain all the way). It is just far too obvious and contrived and is really only saved by the performances.
i also had to watch this for a class. i will be honest and say that i'm writing this without having seen the whole movie, but this was one of the worst movies i've ever had to endure. that was the only class i walked out of. the heavy-handed narrative seemed only to suggest "you don't think you're a racist? well guess what? you ARE!!!" can we start a petition to get Sandra Bullock to stop acting? please?!
