Yes, he did.
I doubt Cronenberg got inspiration from Zeki Demirkubuz's C Blok (from 1994) while doing this adaptation. Who knows.
Danger heightens sexual relationships and intimacy. Trauma imprints an everlasting scar on the mind. Cronenberg recognised this fact.

زخم ، درد ، زجر به مثابه زندگی و پیوند همه اینها در اروتیک کراننبرگی ، تازه آن هم در اوج خودش
The cover of the DVD I rented for this had one quote on the cover saying only: "Sex and car crashes." Possibly the most accurate description of a movie ever written! That being said this film is just incredible, with bizarre strange and dirty sex scenes that are just unforgettable and at times disgusting. Cronenberg really knows how to bring it when he wants to! Awesome film.
Also Elias Koteas was magical in this. Based on his performance in this and his performance in The Thin Red Line, I can tell he's definitely a very underrated actor.
Cronenberg's masterpiece. An ultra-controlled, fetishistic look at a group of selfish, despicable people going to extreme and destructive lengths to feel alive. The cold eroticism and aesthetics are incredible, all the shiny metal and leather against deteriorating bodies and scarred flesh. The performances are equally beautiful, sad and disturbingly empty
This even beats Eyes Wide Shut for the most sterile sex scenes ever! Achievement. Considering that the plot outline must have been: "kinky sex in cars, over and over again."
Transcendent performances across the board (especially Elias Koteas'). A triumph of form and content. Great score, cinematography, editing... also this movie is really FUCKED UP. (9.3/10)
Twisted, pervert, fucked up, horrible, magnificent. Elias Koteas is amazing in that film.
Ugh! Had hopes that a second viewing after 7-8 years would help but no - still a mediocre film that tediously pushes the Frank Booth-button. Just doesn't do it for me in any way.
Horrible. I really was expecting more from Cronenberg. It's just soft porn with almost no story, while the book is amazing. After reading the book you're completely captured by the twisted psychology of the varios characters (Ballard is a master in this), while after watching the movie I just felt I threw away two hours of my day.
Well, I have to say that I did like the sex scenes, I thought they were very powerful and sexy not being too typical or even boring. Also the whole concept of the recreation of the car accidents was very neat, you can almost feel as perverted as them when you're watching it (at least for me).
