His repeated and varied use of close-ups make monument-sized portraits out of each woman's face. Their movement through the house seems both choreographed and nightmarish. More-static shots like a partially disrobed Anna comforting the dying Agnes and the contrasting backgrounds framing Karin and Maria during dinner—a visual shorthand for each of their characters—show such a fantastic mastery of compositional space.

"To see it is to touch the extremes of human feeling. It is so personal, so penetrating of privacy, we almost want to look away." (Roger Ebert)

I have been trying to make up my mind about this one, and it definitely warrants a second watch. I found the style interesting, and I have read before that although this is a drama, it is shot as a horror film. The four actresses are spectacular and I enjoy them all. It's a very complex film, and I still cannot make up my mind about the film. I like it, but maybe not as much as other of Bergman's work.

Unbelievably broad gestures from characters who surround an overwrought death. The death was very believable. The ancillary characters were not. I found it to be a mixed bag. Certainly very modern at times.

The Passion According to Ingmar Bergman

Masterpiece. Harriet Andersson's full-lipped sensuality is nowhere to be found, hidden under an excellent performance of decay. Bergman's embracing of color culminates in this explosion of crimson, Sven Nykvist outdoes himself, creating emptiness in such lush interior. And as always, Ingrid Thulin is fantastic.

one of my absolute favorite Bergman films. virtuoso lighting, camera, and art direction. the master at the top of his game. even contemplating harriet andersson and liv ullman in the same room gives me shivers. the good kind.

Like any other Bergman films, one screening is not enough.. The more you watch it the more you understand it....

First time I watched this film, I didn't feel anything, but I knew I had to watch it later... second time, the movie shoked me; the third one, the movie shocked me so hard that I had doubts about my own faith and purpose of life... and after, I couldn't let to watch it. My fanatism to the movie is so, that I tattooed words "Cries and whispers" in my left arm, as a proof of my love and devotion to this masterprice.

I watched this last night for the first time and then again this morning; not many films make me do that. It's another case of Bergman playing God and perhaps his best.

Bergman takes us where no director has gone before or since. Cries and Whispers is an intrusion of privacy so severe and so unrelenting that one cannot but look away at times. A note also for the masterful cinematographer Sven Nykvist, whose camera sees through souls.

Ingmar Bergman explained the use of the color red his film: "'Cries and Whispers' is an exploration of the soul, and ever since childhood, I have imagined the soul to be a damp membrane in varying shades of red."

Is this in one of his books? Or is it in an interview?

his book Images I believe, he claimed he could have made all his films in black and white except cries and whispers... something like that. I'll have to look it up again.

One of Bergman's best and most complete films, a stunning film visually, great direction and acting, moving screenplay.

Simply put: one of the most moving and incisive films I have ever seen. More than anything, you come away with an idea of Bergman's deep humanity and empathy. It's overwhelming.

Truly touching and dark. I like to use of red in the picture, it's stain on the whole feel of this wonderful, rich picture. Very haunting and interesting... a must see picture from Bergman. Also a bit scary around the end...
