A remarkable film which begins a debate on Jazz and Race which seems to never reach a saturation point. Some characters are more than a little stereotypical, however this enters into the filmic arguments as well. Is jazz a black idiomatic, historical music which demands a certain racial dialectic from its listeners; or do universal sonic definitions apply to jazz regardless of its progenitors? Sure to upset some.

The black life-black music/white life-white music montage sequence is one of the most impressive I've seen in terms of explicating that dialectic.
