I like how the starting point's status quo returns in the end (square in a circle) and becomes much more justificated. After all the Emperor and the Empress are both antiheroes, so a fight between them (deduction of War and Peace) will cause only meaningless sufferings.

Yes its melodramatic, but its also extremely entertaining and beautifully shot. Also has some of the best production design of all time.

Way to artificial compared to his previous and much better films. Is way too obvious and takes its audience for dopes. Laughable special effects and a soupy plot. Gong Li's breasts do a good job of co-starring. Disappointing effort.

I love this film however some of Zhangs other films aren't up to par. If all of them were like this i'd be a fan hands down ;)

all of i have to say about this movie is style: costumes .. elaborate, style. music... accompaniment style action sequences...precise and choreographed style complex structure...stylized photography...visually style even the extras had style..I mean there was so many of them. This film was more of that Yimou artistic magnificence. I forgive you for making a woman, a gun and a noodle shop.
