Here you go—now THIS is how you do it. In my opinion, Romero’s best all-around film (I was never a big fan of Dawn). Great characters, arguably the best zombie effects ever conceived (by Savini in his prime) and excellent satire—this film has it all.

But the character of Bub elevates this film to another plane. Romero would try something similar again in Land of the Dead but it was ham-fisted at best—a zombie screaming skyward in angst can’t compare to Bub’s subtle performance.

Here’s hoping Romero can do it again.

Once you get over the two-dimensional characters and the highly exaggerated performances, this an enjoyable blood and guts romp. The gory visual effects and make-up are inventive and wonderfully grotesque. While there’s less terror here than in Romero predessesor’s, Day of the Dead develops some deep themes on humanity’s hemispheres of civil behavior and primitive violence. The topside zombies are practically a subplot to the human struggle undergroud. These themes find a vanishing point in Bub, a gun-weilding zombie being domesticated by the cooky scientist, Dr. Fisher. There’s also kick a ass Irishman and an enlightened Jamaican for good measure. It’s surprisingly well plotted and features some wickedly satisfying death sequences for the badguys. It’s no masterpiece, but it rocks.
