A stunning film, both an authentic look at religious persecution and a slowly enveloping thriller, with a shocking, open-ended conclusion. Brilliantly acted, written, and directed.
For only his second sound film Dreyer made this powerful account of the persecution of witches in the 17th century. Elegant, slow tracking shots are employed in a story which examines religious orthodoxy as a source of fear. It was made during the Nazi occupation of Denmark and is often interpreted as an allegory of that situation. The word 'masterpiece' is overused but is entirely relevant for this brilliant work...
More ambiguous and conventional than Dreyer's other work, this story of society's undoing of a young woman works best when pointing the finger at relgious zealotry. Also that old lady was amazing.
About suffering they were never wrong, the Old Masters... how it takes place while someone else is opening a window... that even the dreadful martyrdom must run its course anyhow in a corner, some untidy spot where the dogs go on with their doggy life and the torturer's horse scratches its innocent behind on a tree.
I loved the apparent simplicity in which the story kept unwinding yet how wrought the emotions and relations of each character were building towards the end, it's a very interesting piece to think about afterwards. Also, this film must have been a major influence in Bresson's work.
To me this is a film of landscapes, not the traditional kind of landscapes but rather vast, undulating landscapes of complex relationships and emotions, and of course, faces; and no one filmed them the way Dreyer did.
The old lady in this film stole the show. Good film overall though. Dreyer did a lot of films that were dark, racy, and intense for their time. I'd like to know how he got away so clean, image-wise!
Witch-burning octogenarian priest marries ridiculously hot twenty-something daughter of a witch. Priest's frown-faced, Oedipal mother disapproves. Priest's strapping young son comes home for a visit and is charged with keeping his new stepmother occupied. You can pretty much figure out how the dominoes fall after that.
