Leave it to your parents to traumatize you for life, amirite?
Ok I guess. The redneck rape scene is great and iconic, Burt Reynolds was one hot beefy daddy and the hinted homoerotic subtext is pretty awesome, otherwise pretty blah overall, Hollywood dabbling in making an exploitation film. But there are plenty of films before and after this that did the whole 'savage man' story in far more interesting ways
my dad told me about this movie in detail as we drove through a hillbilly campground. i was twelve. still not over it.
a masterwork of early boorman. the atmosphere here is killer, the fear, the tension and the anxiety are all perfectly created, sustained and controlled by boorman. the plot is heavily paced and perfectly unravels. the acting is fantastic, especially voight. there are no shots or edits that do not need to be there and its a fantastic piece of work. a key point in the boorman ouevre, and his status in exploitation.
To this day, this film is the reason that I refuse to go camping. The seconds-long dream sequence at the end haunted my dreams for about a week. They don't make films like this anymore - slow, meditative, character-driven films, such as this one are seldom seen in mainstream theatres. This is a true work of art. The minimalist score is a plus, and it is creepy as hell.
The scene near the end where the survivors are sitting around the table and one breaks down completely sold this film to me. The rest was rough going but a solid terrifying film.
