Russian motion-picture Dersu Uzala is not just the quintessence of pristine cinema or a landmark in art cinema, but is also a living proof that brilliance can be attained through sheer simplicity. The complete review can be found at: http://apotpourriofvestiges.blogspot.com/2012/01/dersu-uzala-1975-cinematic-masterpiece.html

I've watched this film many times just marveling at its simplicity and profundity, captured with seemingly effortless vision. As if a camera was plopped down in the middle of life as it's occurring, unpremeditated or orchestrated. This was the genius of Kurosawa at his best. To this day, if I lose my companion at a shopping mall, I call out Dersu....! Dersu.....! For me, a mall is the wilderness.

I find it difficult whether to call this film solemn or languorous -both in execution and story- , and perhaps it is both. It begins promisingly but then it never really flourishes possibly due to a shy script, though there is a certain charm to the evident staleness of it and the sheer perfection in the cinematography, which is by far my favorite aspect of the movie.

Kurosawa's underrated masterpiece--the hidden gem of his career. What you remember is the sublime musical score which embodies both the young explorer's memories of the old man and the vastness of the Siberian wilderness, photographed with breathtaking, powerful imagery. What you remember is Dersu, a symbol of humanity's lost connection to nature, and the smallness of humanity in the face of nature.

Very moving film of a man of nature trying to adjust to civilization. No other film gets so close at a feeling of isolation in the wilderness like this one does.

The 15th Kurosawa movie I've seen so far. Pretty much all of them are some of the greatest movies of all time and this one is no exception. Fantastic film, fantastic acting with some of Kuorsawa's finest visuals ever.

This gripping, amazingly photographed film is mainly about the friendship between 2 people of very different backgrounds. At the film's opening,we know that Dersu has died,so care about his story. And what a reward for us ----a reflection on life.

This is my favorite movie of all time. I've seen a lot of movies that I loved... but this one, with its portrayal of humanity, nature, friendship between two humans and raw beauty plays with my emotions to the point of tears. Thank you, Kurosawa.

My favorite Kurosawa film (I feel it's his masterpiece as it expressed his own deepest concerns about the disappearing wilderness after his suicide attempt) and one of the most underrated films of all time. This film captured me the first night I watched it since only a few other filmmakers (Malick in Tree of Life, Paradjanov in Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors, Brakhage in Dog Star Man) have expressed the mystical vision of nature which Kurosawa does here. For awhile I considered it 4 stars (since there are sections in the 2nd half of the film which I thought were unnecessary and detracted from the flow) but who am I kidding--despite these minor qualms, it's easily a 5-star film.
