Ultra-realism as its finest. The pro: I get to see a piece of Turkey The con: I could have seen about 3/4th's of the movie by looking into a mirror and bringing up my own existential crises. Ever watch a movie that hits too close to home (resonates to well with you) to be comfortable. Yeah.
An inmense achievement for Ceylan's approach, the movie is both beautiful to look at and endlessly relatable for just about anyone watching, and the fact that he accomplishes that without staying away from his deeply personal circle to tell stories is remarkable.
In Nuri Bilge Ceylan's remarkable somber film Uzak, Istanbul is a beacon attracting Yusuf whose recent layoff from a rural factory spurs him to seek work in the city and points beyond. Mahmut, his urban photographer cousin, puts him up in his apartment but the snowy Istanbul winter blanketing the city not only seems to freeze time but chills the weak emotional connection between them. A spring thaw seems indefinite.
las pequeñas miserias humanas que, juntas, pueden pintar paisajes de melancolía inagotable...
Another serene slow contemplation. Probably my least favorite of his thus far but it did have moments that really moved me deeply. How do you even get shots like that with a boat suspended in such surrealist silence with the snow cascading about. Quite beautiful.
I noticed the rather static camera subtly converged by a brief tremor, oh, wait, that was the earthquake.
Sublime viewing. Whilst the arrival of the cousin from the countryside appears to be that of an unwanted guest, he has nevertheless, a profound affect on Mehmet. The fact that cigarettes are an important signifier of social class in Turkey, lends an added poignancy to the closing scene.
great film, definitely, but i think it's more influenced by the work of Antonioni than Tarkovsky, contrary to popular belief, but i can see the work of both film makers in there. can't wait to see his other films.
A very fitting title to an unusual film that is slow, but then becomes absorbing. That is because the Director gives us details to understand both characters. We do,but they make no attempt to get any closer. I read that Emin Toprak died in a car crash shortly after filming.
In a country where most of the movies are full of cliche, Ceylan's works are a bit of fresh air. This film is a classic already
Very powerful movie with strong cinematography, deals with the alienation of human life.A must watch art-film,one of the best of the past ten years!!!
Lejano es una de las mejores películas contemporáneas que he visto acerca de la soledad y la incomunicación. Es honestamente brutal y lírica al mismo tiempo.
a rarity has happen : i enjoyed this SLOW drama. Distant is just amazing to keep my eyes wide open, while the english title is translated "Distant", but the movie feels so close to my (if not ours) everyday life. every scene is worth watching for. The 'Porn scene' is definitely one of the funniest moment of cinema, and also the most truthful.LOL
There is a silent grace how the story twines with the emotional cesspool of the characters in this film by acclaimed auteur, Nuri Bilge Ceylan. Contemplative and deeply resonant.
