One of the funniest and darkest films I have ever seen.... loved the use of camera, the sharp dialogue, and the brilliant performances, especially Marcello Mastroianni's!!!
Rarely does a final scene retroactively effect my opinion of an entire film as it did in Divorce, Italian Style. The comedy is easy and the wife just too unlikable with that god-awful uni-brow, but Mastroianni anchors the movie with an excellent performance (as always). As a satire, it feels slightly dated, but it was a fun watch nevertheless. 3.5 out of 5 stars.
A charming and witty satire with a great lead performance by Marcello Mastroianni, it isn't perfect and some of the satire is dated, but it's still such a fun little film. It's infectious.
Divorce Italian Style is criticism of society in a funny style. 4 stars out of 5.
saw this for the first time this year, this film aged so well. made me laugh out loud, & I totally agree with Pixelmark's comment about the narrative elements.
A few quick notes. Loved some of the quick narrative elements setting up the village life, the lineage of the main character. Amelie is much indebted to this film. Would like to know more about the use of this device in other films. Some of the acting was overdone, but on whole I enjoyed the plot.
I love comic Mastroianni and the reference to La Dolce Vita. This film was so enjoyable to watch. In addition, I love Germi's cinematographic style. It's so complete and it only adds to the theme of the film. I'd totally see this again.
Entertaining black comedy from director Pietro Germi. Great characters - Marcello Mastroianni is at his best with his trademark offbeat cool - clever twists, and a very funny ending. It does feel a bit too drawn out, not always sustaining the comic energy it should have, so it falls just short of being a real classic.
A screen maestro, Mastroianni, in some of his best comedic moments. I wish Germi would have directed more of this brilliant actor.
This was a fantastically simple movie; a classic trek of love in the shoes of a man who has so much and yet desires more. It is surely worth watching.
Another fantastic film by Pietro Germi, Seduced and Abandoned has a very similar feel, as do most Italian films. I loved the sequences in which he was trying to find ways of getting rid of his wife, the quicksand and the rocket ship. A remarkable script. The ending made the entire film.
