Jan was a student at the Arts Décoratifs in Nice, France, (E.P.I.A.R.). He learned cinema, animation and pixillation and passed his diploma in 1988 (Diplôme National Supérieur d’Expression Plastique) while shooting his first super 8mm (soft) and 16mm (Yellow Death – The Broadword) short films, as well as his first animated films for Dutch TV. He became assistant operator, directed his first video clips and documentaries, started as a cameraman/reporter for an image agency.
In 1989, he directed Gisele Kerosene, “Grand Prix du Court-Métrage” award at the Avoriaz Festival.

This was one hell of a ride, full of crazy chracters, Kounen's frenetic direction and one crazy gun fight scene. Always been a fan of Tcheky Karyo and I loved his performance in this film, he's just nuts. Cassell is badass and I really loved Monica Bellucci as a crazy deaf woman (crazy seems to be the way to the describe everything about this film).
This movie took badassery to another level. Grotesquely twisted humor and visual exaggerations endows a band of lowlifes with a charm that u rarely see in an action movie. It is rude, ugly and at some times stupid -definitely one of my all time favorites!
Basada en una popular historieta (popular en Francia, claro), esta trepidante cinta de acción marcó el debut en el largometraje del director Jan Kounen, y levantó cierta ampula al año de su estreno, debido al exceso de escenas violentas (de gran estilización, pero mucho más brutales que las de un film hollywoodense promedio) y a la cuestionable ideología que se desprende del film (el publico encontró dificil identificarse con una pelicula totalmente carente de personajes positivos, y con la visión de una sociedad que vive en la corrupción total, donde los criminales pueden ser incluso carismaticos). Aún asi, no deja de resultar entretenido presenciar este granguiñolesco enfrentamiento de "malos" contra "menos malos".
