Very funny!
Roger deakins can make even the most uninteresting film look like gold. Forget streep..Deakins is the only star in this one.
The acting was great, the ending even better. I think that it would have been a better film in the hands of a different director, nothing wrong with Shanley's film; but there was no opportunity for the film to be subjected to any other creative direction/vision, which I think is a shame.
Meryl Streep's acting was perfect. Different from something I would usually watch, the last few lines of the movie had some impact on me.
This movie is gorgeous. The acting is superb: Hoffman's best. I don't much like the opening shots with the credits, but almost everything that follows is a perfect film. "Doubt" is full of relevance, allowing the final act to take place in the form of conversation and reflection.
To me it feels like one of Bergman's "chamber pieces", which is not a bad thing at all.
The Jezebel in this film has a face of a moral police who doubt the priest’s (sex (uality)) conduct. There’s nothing to stop her mission so she believes that God is in the doubt. This is such well-written and beguiling film with an extraordinary performance from the entire ensemble.
Slow to start, Doubt builds tolerable interest until the end of its 2nd act where it seethes under emotionally compelling pressure. The ultimate payoff is astounding – a surprising though perfectly realistic (and philosophical) twist, simultaneously warming and chilling. Doubt is a story masterfully crafted and patiently told, with great performances.
This movie would have been at least 10% better if it had a different title. Never before have I felt so negatively about this aspect of a movie. The major characters sure did use the word "doubt" a lot. I felt like I was being attacked by the theme. However, each of the three main actors were above average, and the color scheme was fun to look at. I
I read the play in 06 and really liked it, it was brilliant, I would have loved to have seen it on stage. As for the film itself, the acting was great, as one would expect from the cast, but some of the camera work was distracting, using dutch angles to show that the issue was tilting in someone's direction and some of the editing was needless. Shanley wrote a great piece, but did not direct it well.
marvelous acting by everyone! such great theatrical performance. made you wanna stay till the end.
Brilliant in its ability to manipulate the audiences preconceived notions to the authors ends. Truly creates doubt and in spades. Every performance is stunning and the sermon about gossip is a show-stopper.
