Slipshod modish 60s crime caper directed by jobbing helmer Robert Parrish and surprisingly co-written by Performance (1970) writer/director Donald Cammell. The result is an unfocused swinging heist film which lacks suspense and a cohesive plot. An excellent cast was assembled but James Coburn in particularly looks bemused by the hip talk, and only John Alderton,as a square mild-mannered office-boy, looks well cast.
A stoical banker, Charles Calvert (James Mason), intends to transfer £1million cash by sea to Zurich. Calvert has two sons;layabout playboy Stefane (James Fox) and lowly-paid office employee Antony (John Alderton), both of whom he understandably has little respect for and treat disdainfully. The two brothers decide to unite and ‘get even’ by hatching a cunning and audacious plan to steal the money en-route. They recruit two associates; Stefane’s on/off girlfriend Segolene (Susannah York) and sailor/adventurer Duffy (James Coburn). The money is due to travel from Tangier to Zurich in the safe of a liner, and the quartet has an original plan for modern day piracy. —Britmovie.co.uk
