I'll have to check those other two films out now.
Although the visual effects are superb for its time, it's not the confusing story that makes it such a disappointment. It's just how overblown and annoying it is.
What can I say? For years of terrible descriptions and warnings, I finally watched it and found myself enjoying it. Not everything is good (the digital SFX are awful, Sting is laughable) but there are some incredible moments, and a baroque visual approach that makes the film more like a psychedelic opera than anything.
Lynchs' vision of the classic novel is expertly done. Special FX were pretty good for the time. Its hard to imagine this being redone today.
Recently reread Dune and was thinking the film couldn't possibly be as bad as I remember. I stand corrected. One of the most overbaked, rudderless films ever. The only film by David Lynch he should be embarrased by. Would love to read an account of what went wrong on this year and a half shoot in Mexico. Have seen longer versions over the years and those cuts no better. So many a-listers in production for naught
The only Lynch film I really disliked, although it had some merits, mostly in the visual area. The floating and gluttonous villain was memorable, but the monotony had my eyes feeling heavy.
Dune is definitely messed up and flawed but I still love it. I've never read Frank Herbert's novel so I don't have enough knowledge of the story to get pissed off over how weird or grotesque David Lynch made it. Dune is reasonably nasty and off-putting but its also pretty cool. The extended version is worth watching once (Lynch himself disowned it) but go for the theatrical cut if possible...
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
A prisoner with gigantic eyebrows is brought a cat in a futuristic device. The man bringing the device is an extremely rotund baron who is perpetually floating and has a bizarre skin disease. His sidekick is a Brad Dourif with gigantic eyebrows. The prisoner is told he is poisoned, and that he must constantly milk the cat for the antidote. Taped to the cat is a rat, which is not explained. This is a scene in a movie.
Apart from the complete mess the story was (but it didn't affect me more than that actually), it was the visual effects that left their mark on me. How crappy they were was painful, and I think it did not help to make the movie more believable... Still I have this guilty pleasure when I watch it.
Im with uli on that, prefering the original version, I remember seeing this in low cost theatres as a double feature for 1$ with an old black and white zorro movie. Dunes costumes and music make it worth watching as does so many varied villan performances and kyle maclachlan, probably the only movie i have liked him in other than a small part in the doors and twin peaks.
i saw this as a kid and love it as much now as i did then. there's much wrong with it and its quite unrelated to any other lynch films. but there's a lot to enjoy in it as well and a much strangeness and evoking sci-fi ideas noated all around it. the performances are no less strange and intriguing. it is going to be an impresive blu-ray to see calmly.
Please remove the name of David Lynch related to this movie. He would love that.
There were some pretty cool special effects. I really really liked the "water of life" scene with 'Paul'. I liked noticing all the familiar faces in the cast, but mostly found myself just looking forward to the next time I watch through Twin Peaks. It could have been a great movie.
I really want to like this soo badly but so much of it is a failed product. I know it got taken away from Lynch but what it could have been doesn't change what it is. That all being said I've watched it a dozen times because of Lynch's design and style. I think I keep hoping that it will be better.
