Shut up. Naomi Watts is terrific.
Cronenberg has made some very good movies in the past, and even with his bad ones you can't help but admire how well-made they are. Take "Videodrome" for example: a maddening film that doesn't make sense, but since it's so well-made, you are engaged in it. But in Eastern Promises, everything is perfect. Take a great script and have a director who makes films as good as they can be made, and you'll have a masterpiece.
As a native Russian speaker, I can say they speak unbelievably authentic Russian jargon, the way they swear in Russian is so true. And their accent sounds very natural. Kudos to Cronenberg for this.
Shallow. Dishonest. Couldn't they have hired actual russians for the roles? Not really sure what they were shooting for but it missed the mark.
Forsaking regional authenticity, Eastern Promises still doesn't hold all the aces over We Own The Night, supposedly the tamer work in 2007.
A bit of darkness, a touch of mafia, brotherhood and a subtle breeze of transgression (not too much). I enjoyed it much more than "A history of violence", but the body are already way too clean to make me remember of his former films. Even if it's not under the same conditions, but even if you feel the presence you can barely feel the signature.
This is a perfect example of a bad script (but) interesting movie. Cronenberg handles the material well, inserting his fascination with subculture. Viggo is fantastic too. EP delves into a dark world of violence and sex-trafficking, a subject that could have slipped into "issue" and "thesis" land. But the film stays true to simply asking questions, not answering them. A flawed film that's worth several viewings.
Naomi Watts is truly a terrible actress.Annoying to watch her scenes. In contrast, Mueller-Stahl is a wonderful character actor.
Yeah, I don't see how she can be considered "truly terrible" by any reasonable standard. She's a pro.
Mafia rusa heavy metal onda anda a esconderte!
Intense movie about a midwife that somehow gets involved in the world of the russian maffia.
Not my favorite Cronenberg but there is still a lot to love about this movie. The acting, the script, the terrifying nude fight scene. I also really loved that ending. All around I'd say this was damn good movie.
Uno dei film più violenti che abbia mai visto...un mistero da come una trama tutto sommato abbastanza banale ne esca un film intenso, crudo che è già stato indicato come uno dei migliori "prodotti" del noir contemporaneo.
Something stilted about this (the script?). Which is especially disappointing given how great, surprisingly great, The History of Violence was. The whole film seems to be a over-long set up for a switcheroo moment you can see coming a mile off. Watts and Mortensen are too good for this kind of ineptly-written material, and they do manage breathe some life into it. But over-all, a clunker of The Dead Zone variety.
How flawlessly written and executed this story is. I love how everything seems to fit so perfectly. One of the best by Cronenberg but ironically stripped of all the characteristic features of the canadian filmmaker and still be as raw and powerful as his early work.
