My first Oliveira. It tries too hard to be profound, ending up as a bourgeoisie product rather than a subversion like I feel the writer intended. Still, amazing to see a respected auteur still working at age 100. Grade: D+.

Totally lost on me, but I did feel there was something more there. Some enjoyable shot throughout. Some very uninteresting shots too (for an Oliveira novice)
I'm baffled by the love American critics have for Oliveira. Maybe you need to understand Portuguese to realize how jaded his films feel. The transpositon of Queirós' short tale to the 21th century is ever so awkward, and the horribly stiff acting from Trepa doesn't help. The "greed is bad" message is so heavy-handed you become exausted. I respect Oliveira's diligence, but this faux-artistic lecturing is insufferable.
I'm always happy to see my countrymen engaging in constructive dialogue. Very edifying. Maybe the discussion could benefit from some ideas instead of a dull insult. I'd be glad if you could explain why we should consider this film a "pearl".
The New Yorker review made this sound excellent, but the idea is much better than the execution. This is disjointed to the point of incoherence, none of the dialogue or action makes any sense, even the acting is stiff, and yet somehow the end is completely predictable nonetheless. Very disappointing.
