Synopsis

A man in a suit at a Manhattan firm leaves work on Friday; he looks unhappy. He stops at a fortune teller’s for a Tarot reading: “You are not where you belong,” she tells him. That evening he quits his marriage and walks the streets of New York, passing from a classy bar to a gentleman’s club, then to a high-class bordello, a mugging, a pawnshop, and a diner where someone does listen. He shares his insights with her and later with others. Violence, disappointment, and musings entwine as Edmond loses his moorings while believing he’s found them. Where does he belong? —IMDb

Stuart Gordon

Stuart Gordon is a creative horror film director who started his directing career in 1985. After graduating from Lane Technical High School, Gordon worked as a commercial artist prior to enrolling at the University of Wisconsin as Madison as an Anthropology major. Unable to get in with the film teaching classes, he enrolled in the theater class. Gordon then pursued his own theater troupe called Screw Theater.

Gordon dropped out of the university and moved his theater group to Chicago where he organized the Organic Theater, which put on satire shows with comic and violent themes. The group performed in theaters in New York, Los Angeles, and even in Europe. Gordon’s Organic Theater troupe performed in a play by David Mamet titled “Sexual Perversity in Chicago,” which launched Mamet’s playwriting career. The improv-based comedy “Bleacher Bums” ran for seven years in Los Angeles… read more

i wish i could give half stars or no stars; this was a horrible movie, and i really wanted it to be good. William H Macy isn't a tremendous actor to begin with, but i feel like it takes a certain caliber of actor to deliver Mamet's lines (which are often a bit hammy already) well. also, it was just a garbage script. it should have been a private conversation, not a movie.

William H. Macy plays with brilliance another lonely wanderer of the night, tired of his pathetic existence. if only Stuart Gordon had more talent behind the cameras, and the photography wasn't that "shiny". In the end, it's uneven, and the violence a bit cartoonish, but the strength of the piece is, of course, Mamet's dialogue and edgy situations, always compelling and deeply moralistic.
