I consider EDVARD MUNCH one of the greatest films ever made and Peter Watkins one of the most forward-thinking filmmakers of our time.
(Watkins wrote a critical essay on the mass media’s response to September 11th, and if you haven’t yet read it, I implore you to do so: http://www.mnsi.net/~pwatkins/hollywood.htm )
I thought EDVARD MUNCH was superbly edited, a great example of how one can take a wide variety of subject matter (art, sexuality, politics, the relationship between madness and creativity) and jump back and forth between disparate issues and events while gradually revealing their interrelatedness.
It’s a fascinating film, with no shortage of striking faces and lots of provocative incidental dialogue.
Highly recommended.
