Effi Briest

Based on the novel by Theodor Fontane, the 17 year-old, Effi is married to 38 year-old Geeret Baron von Innstetten. They move to the small town of Kessin on the east coast of Germany.

Effi is bored and even when her child Annie is born she can’t manage to feel comfortable in this town and in a house that gives her bad dreams. It’s a welcomed opportunity for her when Major Crampas, an old friend and comrade of her husband, moves to Kessin as well.

Effi begins to spend a lot of time with Crampas. Together they join an amateur drama group and it doesn’t take long until a passionate love affair starts between them.

Meanwhile Innstetten is promoted and he, Effi and Annie are moving to Berlin. Effi frees herself from her bad conscience about Crampas and starts enjoying herself and Berlin very much. Six years later Innstetten finds some old love letters of Effi and Crampas and believes he must regain and defend his honor. –Wikipedia
