Synopsis

Mabel Yuen-Ting Cheung was born in Hong Kong and graduated in English Literature and Psychology at the University of Hong Kong. She went on to take an Advanced Diploma in Drama and Visual Arts at Bristol University in the UK, and an MFA in Film Production at New York University’s Graduate Film School. She directed her first feature as a thesis film for NYU; after its commercial release in Hong Kong it won prizes at the Hong Kong Film Awards and the Asia Pacific Film Festival. Since then she has directed five more fiction features, all of them critical and commercial successes and winners of numerous prizes.

She has also produced and co-scripted two hits by her regular creative partner Alex Law: Painted Faces (1988, Chicago Film Festival Silver Hugo for Best First Feature) and Now You See Love, Now You Don’t (1991). In 1993 she produced the mythological martial-arts adventure Moon Warriors. Traces of the Dragon is her first documentary. —Fortissimo Films
