On 14 January 1931, around 8 pm, an earthquake with a reported magnitude of 7.8 and lasting 3 minutes and 10 seconds hit the city of Oaxaca in Mexico. Eisenstein, who was in Mexico filming ‘Que Viva Mexico’, flew to Oaxaca shortly after to film conditions in the affected area.
