michel houellebecq probably laughed, when he watched this pseudo-intellectual soft porn
I watched the movie right after I finished reading the book which made a still lasting impression on me. This was a big mistake! If the book could be described as a rough and at times brutal weapon tearing your brain and exposing some of the deformed ideas, delusions and lifestyles of the western society, then this movie adaptation could be compared to a toy pistol. I did not watch it to the end.
A depressing, nostalgic thinker - as it had to be, since it's based on the famous novel by Michel Houellebecq. A hybrid of the morbid and the mordant, the decadent and the darkly delicious, which will not necessarily make you happy, but will certainly leave you impressed. Beautifully shot and impressively acted, this is an evocative, though-provoking and frequently moving film, though it's often hard to engage with its unlikeable characters. Always great to watch Franka Potente on screen.
