I also felt like the attitude towards drugs and drug users was pretty oversimplified, but I'm guessing that's more of a reflection of the attitude in Brazil.
For all of you that are saying that this was a fascist, homophobic movie: You didn't get the whole point! Padilha does an explicit critic about the problems that we have to deal in Brazil, especially in Rio. Despite being a fictional work, it shows the tough reality of a society plagued by corruption and social inequality. In fact, the reality is much worse than that.
What a right wing piece of shit this was, seriously. Glorifying police brutality, racism, bigotry, homophobia and a black white world (police = all good, poor people = all drug dealers and scum) Cinema fascism at its worst. Shame on you Mr. Padilha...
A powerful film that takes the audience on a rough journey. One thing's for sure, the characters are not the same at the end of "Elite Squad" as they were at the start. Great handheld camera work and fluid editing, with a high contrast, "hot" look similar to some of Tony Scott's early 00's films. It's no surprise that Hollywood is knocking on Jose Padilha's door for a "Robocop" reboot. But see this first.
The hard-line reactionary response to Cidade de Deus. A bit pompous, but seductively entertaining. As an action director, Padilha could teach Hollywood plenty.
Pro-cop propaganda which actually resembles the fascist aesthetics of a Lang bonanza or even De Palma's fixation for...blood, disregarding the fact it simultaneously criticizes the system it presents. It's good vs evil in the clearest of definitions yet it provides informative background for both sides of the coin in order to mingle the lines of which is good / evil and it's not assaulting to the viewer either.
As ruas provam o contrário.
@Daniel S. Why do you say that Los Angeles, Bogota or Khartoum are more suitable for the story? How come the behavior is not brazilian?
***1/2. Golden Berlin Bear. The sole problem with TROPA DE ELITE is the screenplay that describes scenes or behaviours that are not specifically Brazilian. Los Angeles, Bogota or Khartoum could very well have been chosen to shoot this script. I really had the impression to see an episode of THE SHIELD at times. In short, José Padilha tells us that, in a corrupted society, the righteous one either dies or either becomes like those he wanted to denounce. A hand held camera helps him to give a documentary tone to his demonstration. The result is good but is certainly not worthy of a Golden Bear. Recommended, though.
Who's the bad guy: that is the question on this one. Too little work on the story, big cuts in the flow and some really banal situations with some too first hand criticism.
Just finished watching it. I'm a big fan of cop movies and it seems like Brazil is a lose lose situation no matter what side your on, unlike some of the American cop stories. All in all it's a solid film.
An interesting glimpse into the life of police officers in Rio. Tropa is definitely worth a watch if not only to get a basic idea of how violent and chaotic that life could be. To me personally, however, the narrative from the main character got old after a while and the movie developed a bit slowly. Three stars from me...
Brilliant film that will unfortunately be judged by its implied politics rather than its cinematic strengths. I was not expecting something so fiercely engaging. A real winner.
More and more crap. Piece of crap from recent brazilian cinema, José Padilha, director and nazi-fascist-neocapitalist.
Exelente pelicula me encanto...en ningun momento te suelta gran realizador....
