It's strange that Trier's first film was a near-masterpiece while his second film felt like an above-average student film by some college kids who are obsessed with meta-fiction and had just seen Clerks.
The ideas are less sophisticated than his incredibly ambitious debut, which is not a bad thing at all since I really liked this combination of the buddy comedy and horror. There is an enjoyable film-student feel to it with the usual cleverness, humor and strange stylistic choices. The performances by Von Trier and Vorsel playing themselves are compelling and definitely worth mentioning.
an absolute masterpiece of low budget horror filmmaking, heart-scarring and intensely moving
A wonderful film before Lars Von Trier decided his avocation was to be a professional asshole. The pen pal sequence is genius!
Lars and Niels had it all. A great horror movie, a film within a film, a taste of the screenwriting process..
