So, it is 5 stars to Kar-Wai. 3 to Soderbergh, and nothing to Antonioni.
Couldn't stop feeling like I was watching soft porn during Atonioni's story. Disappointing.
I hated the Antonioni story. I think that he's one of the most overrated directors of all time. The other two stories were charming.
Four stars for Kar-wai; the others had their moments and were nice to look at but Gong Li is amazing in The Hand. Completely erotic and sensual, the exploration of a relationship that is physically intimate but emotionally distant reminds us of films where the woman is placed on a pedestal, a muse of sorts and in spite of her flaws, she manages to move us and incite change. The mood of isolation is right on target.
Although I am not a fan of Kar-Wai, I loved his segment. It is a masterpiece. Soderbergh's segment was a success except for the last scene; the revelation scene. Too direct and turned the subtle segment into a joke ends with an exclamation point. Antonioni's segment was just another disappointment by him. Having a big name does not mean that people would like anything you make, sir.
Although irregular, is a film to be seen. Especially to see a different facet of Soderbergh, and to give a more magnificent work of Kar-Wai.
I felt as though Antonioni's was the most disappointing of the three. Kar-Wai and Soderbergh both did a great job though.
Where is the sensuality, the erotic, the passion? Apart from that first scene in Wong Kar-Wai's "Hand", where both characters meet. And Soderbergh's dream sequence (brilliantly filmed, incredible photography)... If it was not for Soderbergh's "Equilibrium" this movie would be completely pointless. And now lets wait for the hordes of Wai's followers defending the most overrated director of the last 10-20 years.
Hm, I felt the opposite most of you felt. I thought Wong Kar-Wai's segment was week and the other two were really great
Wong Kar-Wai's segment is great and does need to be seen. However this cannot be really said for the other two; Soderbergh's is too quirky and has little to do with the subject of the project to work, while Antonioni's is just bad.
Antonioni had no idea what he was doing with his film. Soderbergh had an idea, but he may have had a hard time showing it to the audience. Wong knew exactly what he was doing, and he showed so much about "love and lust," all of which was captured beautifully. Savvy
kar-wai + antonioni participations are great. soderbergh is a waste of time
I love the first segment. Love it! Wong Kar-Wai nailed the eroticism and as always was stunning to look at. I enjoyed the second segment but didn't really see the eros. The third by Antonioni which should have been grand was awful.
