The usual themes, childhood isolation and the collapse of the nuclear family, explored through the relationship between human and extraterrestrial. Spielberg uses this idea to craft a moving, intimate, often claustrophobic film (about the clash between 'belief' and cynicism) that is also genuinely surreal; the apocalyptic imagery contrasting against the suburban American setting to create a sense of real danger.
E.T. was one of the most terrifying creatures I'd ever seen.
To usher in my twenty-sixth birthday I watched ET on VHS. The storytelling is visual, using just the right snapshots to further the narrative. William's score creates the perfect atmosphere for an adventure. Clear needs and wants: ET- to get back home & Elliott to mend his broken family, his loneliness. I think this is visual storytelling at its best, simplest and most innocent.
The only film that has the power to make me cry.
A beautiful still. A beautiful film.
Greatest film of all time.
saw this in theatres a few days ago so I can finally relate to the magic of this movie for kids and adults. no one can deny the chills they had while watching this film. some similarities I found (oddly enough) in this and "Jaws" is the scene where Elliott and ET are mirroring each other, like Chief Brody and his son mirroring each other. it was a hilarious movie but also sad, about a family whose father just left.
The Quiet Man/Frog dissection sequence is a thing of beauty and grace.
Who knew an alien can make a person cry? One of my all time favorites! From the sheer beauty and human quality Spielberg gave E.T., to the magic from beginning to end...no more words can describe the love i have for the little alien!!!
Vastly engaging the first time I watched it, E.T stands the test of time even though some of the magic has faded with time. E.T symbolizes Spielberg's epic sense of storytelling, the grandeur of his cinematic style that has come to define his entire body of work. Spielberg rarely makes small films in so much as he is a master of elevating the ordinary to the extra-ordinary and beyond. A unique master of the craft.
what a silly movie ¬¬ I don't understand it's magic, really
one of the few films to evoke an emotional response out of me (tears)
So nice to revisit this for the first time since early childhood. Some of Spielberg's finest work. One can see how this had such an influence on Apichatpong.
Awful movie, real cheesy trash.
i love the kiddy drew barrymore :)
Shotguns > walkie talkies.
Indisputably great. I remember watching E.T. when I was young and I used to be scared of the alien the first time he appeared. But then when Elliot greets the alien and lures him in the house, the movie became magic. This is one of Spielberg's most popular works and for good reasons. It's pure, simple and enchanting in ways many Disney clones could never be. A modern classic.
The 20th anniversary version made me cry. Spielberg ruined my childhood by destroying it with half assed CGI and walkie talkies.
E.T. was one of my worst reoccurring nightmares when I was a kid, still is.
One of my favourites movies, especially during my childhood. It talks about of the friendship between a human and extraterrestial, meaning that if two living beings could have a so deep relation... Human beings can too!! I mean, I thinks is more impressive than Elliott loves (in a friend way) to E.T. than Hitler loves Woody Allen because both are human and probably have the same worries and interest.
So creepy when he turns white.
In 10 words or less, It's Close Encounters of the Third Kind for kids.
I saw this way late but I could see what all the fuss was about. Great story brilliantly directed by the master.
