The picture was finished and locked before Kubrick died. The finished product is his vision.
Watched it immediately again after it had finished. Do not understand the mixed reaction at all; to me this is a masterpiece (and definitely one of Kubrick's finest)
The greatest film about the male gaze, about the way men think about women, about sexual insecurities. Deeply uncomfortable, personal, and haunting. Indeed, this is one of cinema's greatest masterpieces.
Someone explain to me where the flaws are in this movie because I don't see any.
I so wish SK had not died so soon and had finished his very personal vision of this film

When he didn't want it, it was offered to him many times on a platter. But when he did want it, he couldn't get it.
Although it lacks the perfectionism of classic Kubrick and feels unfinished, it makes a great statement on secret societies and erotism.
I disagree. I think it's one of the best films Kubrick made. It pretty much closes the book on marriage and fidelity. I've heard people criticize the movie, and it seems pretty flawless to me. That said, I was bored by it the first time I saw it (like a number of Kubrick's films). But the second time, I was almost overwhelmed by how good I think it is. Where are the flaws?
A woman once told me she hated this because "it was about nothing." I argued till I was blue in the face...to no avail. I think you need to have had a completely generic, honest, guilt-free existence to not be moved by this film.
I don't agree with the people who say "You must have a knowledge about the point of the film before you watch it" but you should really read some of the writings about the connections between "Eyes Wide Shut" and the Illuminati 'cults' before or after watching the film. As well as the other films of Kubrick.
I don't think the Illuminati element has much to do with the point of the film. At least not specifically the Illuminati. It may resemble what that's rumored to be (I don't know), but the larger point is that the rich and powerful are less bound by social conventions than the people socio-economically beneath them. So, they're able to more wantonly do whatever they want to do, and, in effect, express what it is every man would do with an equally boundless life. The contrast between Cruise's character and those men allows Kubrick to show what's roiling beneath the surface of any man, rich or otherwise.
It's also important to note the masks. Kubrick's use of masks was always the same. The mask of his characters were always there to allow them to do whatever it is they desired to do. Whether they were robbing banks ("The Killing"), doing "ultraviolence" ("A Clockwork Orange") or having sex with as many women as possible ("Eyes Wide Shut"), the masks in his movies were more honest than the faces.
Algo muy profundo dentro de mí me dice que esta algún día va a ser reevaluada como la mejor de Kubrick. Aunque tal vez no...
I was pleasantly surprised by this film. It was intriguing from the first 10 minutes and stayed that way through out. I'm not sure why this movie got such terrible reviews from some people, but I thought it was brilliant. the message is a little indirect but if you just think about it, it will come to you. it is so amazing and Nicole & Tom did a great job acting.
One of Kubrick's most fascinating films. It's somewhat rough; Kubrick's sense for iconic visuals isn't as present here as it is in his earlier works, and it would have benefited from further editing, but nevertheless, it is a complex, intriguing final statement from one of cinema's greatest artists.
Oh, those skin tones! Kubrick's use of available light and high speed film raises primitive technique to sublime sophistication. We naked apes create stunning mechanisms in our attempts to rarify our animal existence. Kubrick plays along as he always does in this elegant and sad monument to the human experiment. The script's last word, the woman's f-word, is Kubrick's last hope for our return to our lost essence.
I just reviewed this masterpiece. I always marvel myself at the precision of camera movements made by the genius Kubrick, in his last work. Very interesting analysis that the film does, about the mysteries and crannies of the human mind.
Acabei de rever essa obra-prima. Sempre me encanto com a precisão dos movimentos da câmera do gênio Kubrick, em sua derradeira obra. Muito interessante a análise que o filme faz, sobre os mistérios e esconderijos da mente humana.
Kubricks last film. There was a lot left out from his original cut. Secret societies and MKUltra themes were toned down or completely left out in the version released to the public. Still a good film...but you have to read between the lines to see what Kubrick was trying to say

Sensual and sexy "close" film making: perfect soft bokeh. This film glows. Some of the most complex acting and characters ever put to screen. Complain all you want about the casting - few would have fit as well as Cruise and Kidman. Their melodramatic & sarcastic styles fit perfectly into their flirty-filthy roles. A goldmine of monologues. A minimalist story in which dreams become reality and part of the arc plot.
oh god, nicole kidman talks like bill cosby had a brain seizure. could have been a great film if it had a better cast a better ending
The ending is one of the best things about the movie. The whole point of the film is wrapped up in the movie's final moments.
I think this movie could have been better. The cinematography was great and I like that he kept his filming style but the story seemed off a little and I wasn't a fan of the whole thing being explained to the doctor in one scene. It felt like a lazy way to wrap up the story. I was a little indifferent about Cruise and Kidman, they weren't bad but I didn't really feel a connection between them. Not his best.
It would have been a 5 star masterpiece instead of a 4 star flawed one, if Kubrick had lived long enough to trim and fine tune the final 30 minutes, which drag on far too long, and the endlessly repeated piano notes turn from chilling to irritating. But the masked ball / orgy is probably THE greatest sequence that Kubrick ever filmed. However, the film WAS unfinished, and it shows.
Kubrick doing a David Lynch cover, at moments enthralling and at others confusing, but always enigmatic, deconstructing traditions of marriage and duty to reveal the animals lurking beneath us all. also love how he paints the city of manhattan the same way he does his characters; sleazy roleplayers, all there for a reason. i feel that not having tom cruise and nicole kidman here could have made this much better.
I found this one incredible unnerving and disturbing as well, more so than anything else Kubrick ever did. He left the movie world with a great film.
Simple plot. Feels like an odd mixture of Ophuls/Bergman. Kubrick's last masterpiece.
