A ‘mockumentary’ hosted by Dr. Francis B. Gross, a coroner. He is trying to show you the different ‘faces’ of people while dying. There are faked scenes of people getting killed intermixed with footage of real accidents. There are executions by decapitation (in an Arab country) and the electric chair. One scene shows a group of tourists in Egypt smashing a monkey’s head while still alive and eating its brains. There are shots of animals eating people and satanic orgies using dead bodies. There is a segment that deals with an alligator that accidentally entered ‘residential’ waters. The local warden goes in his boat to get the crocodile back into the sea when he accidentally falls over and becomes gator bait. The film ends with news clippings of people jumping off buildings and major accidents. –IMDb
John Alan Schwartz wrote, produced and directed Faces of Death, a 1978 mondo film which guides viewers through explicit scenes depicting a variety of ways to die and violent acts. He also appears in one of the segments in this film, as the leader of the alleged flesh eating cult in San Francisco and puts in cameo appearances in several other films in this series. John Alan Schwartz has gone on record as saying this film’s budget was $450,000 and there are estimates that it has grossed more than $35 million worldwide in theatrical releases, not including rentals
He now reviews films together with his partner Joan on their show “Two Jews on Film”.
Eventually this comes an unbearably grim assault on your eyes, immensely dated, and with the fake deaths mixed with real ones, pointlessly tasteless. At least with something like Africa addio (1966), no matter how morally questionable it is, the creators were going for a serious message. Warning people about the obvious dangers of woodland bears and the wheel of fortune of life and death is not the same. And dear Lord the end credits with *that* song is atrocious.
This is pure amazingness. It was the first time a movie moved me. Latter I've discovered lots of scenes in here were fake. Here's an interview with the creator http://www.onthemedia.org/2012/feb/24/legacy-faces-death/
