Whimsical surrealism of metamorphoses as a way to overcome the surrealism of everyday hardships, this delightful short must be some kind of masterpiece! What I particularly love is the fast rhythm and the delicacy of the whole film.
Animation allows artists to break away from the physical limits of representation, making it the most enabling form of surrealism. It seems the earlier you go in animation history, the increasingly abstract and surreal, whereas the later the more based in real physics and logic, which is a shame. It isn't really until .gif animations that we've returned to such blatant whimsy, but those get overlooked --PolarisDiB
Creative animated short with a stream-of-conciousness that doesn't always work but its a fun ride.
such a playful and fun animation, with an adorable score. it's only downfall is perhaps it's excessive cuteness. incredibly impressive work considering time period. reminiscent of "little prince" imagery, aesthetically very pleasing.
Wonderful! I had to watch it twice, and I think I'll watch it a few times more.
Genius! It's truly amazing that this was made in 1908. This is like seeing what Don Hertzfeldt's Great Grandfather was up to!
Fast-paced and imaginative, Cohl created one of the first masterpiece of animation.
