Whaaaatta fuck was that ending? So brutal that I laughed my ass off. Now I want to see all of Breillat's films.
I think people take the ending too literally and don't consider the posibility of it being Anaïs' vision - her (sexual) fantasy. First of all, the absurd/exaggerated way the scene was done (without spoiling it for followers) and most important: Anaïs wanted to have sex with someone she didn't love and she didn't like her mother or sister.
A queasy-making dissection of early-onset internalized patriarchy, and as close to a cinematic adaptation of the sexual politics of Andrea Dworkin as I can recall off the top of my head. Unless, of course, it isn't that at all, but instead an affirmation of a female sexuality stripped of sentiment and in some kind of perverse accord with a brutal masculine principle. Either way: chilling, queerly moving filmmaking.
Though Breillat is a great cinematic craftsman and a woman to admire (intellectually), this film rather offended me (I cannot stomach kids used in film in this way). However, Breillat tells it like it is and manages to raise strong questions: sex/virginity/relationships in today's patriarchal society, alienation, narcissism, dysfunctionality. And the cherry on top: was Anais the one who was raped or was it Elena?
That ending. Oh boy. Talking about a little poke of paranoia. I will NEVER rest at a rest stop. EVER.
The conclusion was so raw and creepy, but despite it, you kind of see what Breillat wanted to say, and then, you can decide if you still like the movie. Or not. Unusual and violent, even in its low parts, A ma soeur remains a pretty weird object :some might find it absurd and gratuitous in its ending, others will just accept all the sordidness of the underlying meanings this story conveys. Repulsing but intriguing.
"To My Sister" would have been a much better, not to mention more literal, translation of the title than the shit they ended up with
Simply terrible. Well crafted but imploded with that ending. What did it mean? It was a viscous cop out is what it was
The honest feel of the love/hate relationship between the two sisters went down like a gulp of cold water on an empty stomach. With the startling ending, I found this film was tremendous.
loved this. and the ending was soo.. wow. i loved the ending a lot. i loved the whole thing. the ending could be seen as destroying the film, but it goes with it.
