Synopsis

The Soviets have developed the MiG-31 – a fighter that flies at 6 times the speed of sound, is invulnerable to radar, and worst of all – has a lethally sophisticated weapons system that the pilot can control through thought impulses. As soon as the pilot detects a threat – either visually or on a scope – his thought impulses will direct a missile to that threat, without so much as pushing a button. Mass production of the MiG-31 will give the Russians a huge advantage. Vietnam veteran Mitchell Gant, a former USAF ace pilot, is smuggled into the USSR to infiltrate the Russian airbase at Bilyarsk, where the Firefox/MiG-31 is being finished, and STEAL THE FIREFOX! Gant manages to overpower Col. Voskov – the Russian test pilot – and steal the aircraft, just as the USSR’s First Secretary arrives at the base. Now Gant will run the gauntlet of Russian defenses – land-based missiles, naval warships, and helicopters – and reach a refueling point from a US Navy submarine. But the Russians still have a trump card – a prototype MiG-31 – and they send it up in pursuit of Gant after he completes refueling! What follows is a harrowing, cat-and-mouse chase across the ice floes of the Arctic. Who will survive? –IMDb

Clint Eastwood

Perhaps the icon of macho movie stars, and a living legend, Clint Eastwood has become a standard in international cinema. Born on May 31, 1930 in San Francisco, the son of a steel worker, Eastwood was a college dropout from Los Angeles College, attempting a business related degree. He found work in such B-films as Tarantula (1955), and Francis in the Navy (1955) until he got his first breakthrough with the long-running TV series “Rawhide” (1959). As Rowdy Yates, he made the show his own and became a household name around the country.

But Eastwood found even bigger and better things with Per un pugno di dollari (1964) (“A Fistful of Dollars”), and Per qualche dollaro in più (1965) (“For a Few Dollars More”). But it was the second sequel to “A Fistful of Dollars” where he found one of his trademark roles: Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo. (1966) (“The Good, The Bad and The Ugly”). The movie was a big hit and he became an instant international star. Eastwood got some excellent roles… read more

In der UdSSR des Jahres 1982 mußte man sich also alle 50 Meter ausweisen. Dieser Film über jene KGB-Arbeitsbeschaffungsmaßnahme ist allerdings nur eher mäßig spannend.

Pretty dull Clint Eastwood vehicle is for the most part an unremarkable and uninvolving Cold War thriller, before becoming a credibility-stretching (though not in an entertaining way) action film. Overlong, all but devoid of tension, and burdened by some unconvincing special effects - this is easily one of Eastwood's more forgettable efforts.
