I wanted to watch this first and then Apocalypse Now, which I'll be watching any of these days
Incredible looking film. That Kubrickian aesthetic precision, coupled with the visual potential the war film seems to provides makes for a good match. But yeah, second half isn't as strong and coherent as the brilliant first.
In hindsight, ridiculous to think this got ignored upon its release in favour of Platoon, similar to how The Thin Red Line was ignored over Saving Private Ryan. People are just shit at picking war films to like, I guess.
A masterful piece of filmmaking, it just keeps you riveted through and through (not only the first part you heathens). I often think Kubrick was the ultimate ironist, after weaving an always original plot scheme he lays the truth on you with a sting that is at times far more enlightening than any conventional conclusion I've been able to witness so far.
this movie was absolutely amazing. everything is so powerfully raw and open about opinions/thoughts/actions that went on. I was so very surprised by the acting job (and appearance) of D'Onofrio. the first half of the film is quite different from the second half. I really enjoyed the first part but they're both equally amazing. probably my second favorite Vietnam film, I totally recommend this.

There isn't much plot but the script makes up for it esp in the first half with the dark comedy. The second half master its atmosphere. I felt like I was walking with the Marines, from the barracks to the battlefield. Although it does gets a bit weary in the process. The camera shots brilliantly portray the scenes and contains iconic imagery. Its an effective observation of dehumanization of warfare on the soldiers.
My all-time favorite film, and please don't even ask me why; it's a "visceral" thing.
Yes, first act is great. But the second and third acts are far more powerful and upsetting, one of the most powerful streches of cinema I've seen.
I don't know what you crackas are smoking but the second half is as good as the first.
If this were an hour long film with the boot camp being its sole locale, we wold be referring to this as one of the greatest films ever made. However, in saying this I am just as guilty as about 99% of viewers in selling the second part short. It's very good, and serves as release to the first point (what kind of war movie actually uses combat as a way to lighten the mood?)
5/5 for the first part, 2/5 for the rest. If boot camp had been expanded to the entire feature it would have been A+
At the risk of sounding like a broken record, this film could have joined the ranks of 2001, Dr. Strangelove, A Clockwork Orange etc. if the first act was merely expanded to feature length. If the closing scene of Full Metal Jacket (not that it's current climax is too shabby) would have faded out right after Pile blew his head off, it would have been a masterpiece.
Seems mandatory to watch this before joining the Marine Corp. My recruiter showed the film to me for the first time while I was in DEP. After rifle week at Parris Island, even my senior drill instructor allowed us to watch the film. An incredible treat lemme tell ya considering where we were. Speaking of boot camp, that's the strongest part of the movie but the Vietnam part isn't quite up to par with the rest. 4/5
