fuses

By Chuck Vollers on February 26, 2011

A short from 1967, in which Carolee Schneemann films herself while having sex with her lover, composer James Tenney. Schneemann boasts about how FUSES features “no objectification or fetishization of the woman.” I guess that means you rarely get a clear sustained look at her. You do however get quite a few loving closeups of her partner’s penis. The footage has been cut-up, collaged, and painted over and just looks outstanding. The soundtrack is another matter. The only thing heard is the crash of the surf and some sea birds. There’s probably a pretentious rationale behind it but what it really reminds me of is one of those wave machines you use to help you get to sleep, thus lowering a great piece of kinetic visual art to the level of sexy wallpaper. But if you can stay awake, it is great wallpaper!
