I love this movie. It’s starts off so simplistic, the notion of going home, but the more you delve into the background of Zach Braff’s character the more interesting it all gets. Natalie Portman was so amazing, I want to marry her even more now. And Peter Saarsgard and the other ‘friends’ are like an extension of Richard Linklater’s Slacker, just being able to see these very unique lives and they way in which people evolve from when they were children, with this concept of ‘leaving home’ becoming a major theme in the film.
I don’t really know how to valuate how much I like the movie, like Chuck Klosterman said, it’s hard to say why you like something because usually it has something to do with your emotions. Zach Braff has written, directed and starred in his own film. And it’s great.
The reasons people seem to dislike the film are due to it being supposedly pretentious, having no real message, idolizing soundtrack over substance. All of that is bullshit. This is a film that allows you to explore the microcosm of another person’s world. And that is what cinema acts to achieve.
