James Mason may not have the best northern accent ... but Lynn Redgrave is just amazing.
I just watched this after not seeing since it first came out. It's much harsher and darker than I remember. Terrific performances from all involved. Most definetely of it's time , but as such it's pretty terrific.

"morality tale" my foot — this film consists of little more than slut-shaming, sexism and grating quirkiness. oh well, at least things (kind of) work out for georgy in the end. also, don't be fooled into thinking james mason is going to be this handsome, either — the still is from the earlier "thunder rock," in which he starred with a different redgrave entirely.
