I've lovingly rewatched this so many times since i was a teen. Beautiful animation, atmosphere, mood; genuinely intelligent and insightful subtext. i find the whole thing so elegantly balanced and subtle. And for my teens as a female in our brainwashing world, I'm glad I was exposed to the very unconventional female of 'Major Kusanagi', strength, intelligence and introspection! We're all robots really.

I feel like I might have missed something cos I'm not a fan of the manga/anime, so maybe it just got lost on me a little bit. But the animation and music were pretty good.

Disappointing, cyberpunk can do so much more than this. Makes me wish Chris Cunningham would get around to making NEUROMANCER.

completely mind blowing, I can't think of many sci fi stories that touch so fundamental questions of our species and its evolution.

"making of a cyborg" (song in opening credits) is one of the most engaging and epic songs I have heard in a film... actually in general!

Poetry and Philosophy... Beautiful film about the identity and the self. Just watched the pointless re-mastered version "2.0" (don't ever buy it!) and just once again the film captivated me.

good, but not as good as I'd been led to expect. Overhyped?

The Matrix is better. There, I said it.

What an imagination of Mamoru Oshii's. I was just fascinated while watching it. The way of thinking, the connection amongst details, it may become my all time favourite sci-fic movie on the upshot.

Deeply philosophical, taking the tale of men and machine interacting with other and the result of a fusion between robots and humans to a extreme level. Breathtaking.

Works both as an intelligent, thought-provoking science-fiction film and as an explosive action movie - rivaling most live-action films in both categories. The plot can be leaden with exposition at times, but the stunning visuals and deep philosophical questions it raises make this an impressive and important work.

Could well be the all time greatest Science Fiction movie.

Watched it as an eager thirteen year old and it blew me away...needs a rewatch to see if it holds up.

The second movie covers the same ground just as intelligently, but with more visual flair and less pretension.

I'm usually not that into anime, unless it's Miyazaki, Tekkonkinkreet, or, ever since last night, Ghost in the Shell. This movie is my cyberpunk wet dream, and I'm aching to watch the second one. Alas, it is not available on netflix instant. Soon...

I didn't love this one honestly, the second is better (and the new GitS which isn't by Oshii). Tenshi no Tamago and Beautiful Dreamer are my favourites by Oshii by far.

I'm not a big anime fan... but I can't deny that this is one of the great sci-fi films. Dark, tonally rich, with a short-sharp-shock approach to violence that I think will be an influence to filmmakers for a long time.

Dan Nielsen made a good point; this is from the GitS series. Very good movie btw

Initially somewhat unapproachable and bewildering, I found it quite difficult to understand basic premise and story, but the poetry and stillness in the visuals and score kept my attention. I need to view this film again, I understand the narrative and message after watching it and think I will gain a better appreciation of it after a second viewing...

The frame here appears to be from the GITS: Stand Alone Complex television series, which is not directed by Oshii. The movie contains a similar frame, but the overall style is very different.

I never watched the series, so maybe I'm missing something that fans should already know, but there were a few things never elaborated, like WHO THE COCK IS GENERAL MALICE? On the plus side, I enjoyed it nonetheless for its good animation, good ending, futuristic society and its use of symbolism. But still, it can be confusing.

That's probably because that image is from the Stand Alone Complex series, not from this movie.

Classic of the cyberpunk genre that provides an interesting examination into consciousness, individuality, and the changing social planes presented by the emerging presence of the web.
