Here's the clincher - it was muddled, and I had low expectations. I thought it was going to keep it's queer subtext at arm's length, and then it didn't, and that's what took the film to the next level for me. Awesome.
Maybe not comparable to "men" films on the level of The Wild Bunch or The Wages of Fear - maybe Le Cercle Rouge - but a very good film about different men coming together and meeting the same fate.
