Putz.
Goodfellas marks the final of the second cycle of Scorsese's career. An urgent and absolutely stunning picture.
I would like to say something from 9gag about this but not sure whether it is appropriate or just another meme.
I'd rank GoodFellas and The Departed above Raging Bull and Taxi Driver. Rings false? Call me a putz then.
What makes the movie work is how funny it is, the quick paced editing, the brilliant use of popular music and the realism. While some scenes have been played out ad nauseam (the funny like a clown scene, for example) it stills retains thier bite with sincere and honest delivery. This is Schoonmaker's finest hour, quick image and sound cuts highlight a sense of urgency, especially the last hour of the film.
I only feel somewhat guilty of having my ten year old nephew watch this, but I just had to after seeing him go crazy over his Mafia II video game and saying, "This should be a movie!" Hahaha.
The film is an intense study of a Mafia family --based on true events-- explores the lives of gangsters through the eyes of Henry Hill. The story is deeply fascinating, the acting is SUPERB, the script is sheer inside brilliance and the movie feelings of the atmosphere of the time period seems so real. It's a true modern classic.
For some reason we're all ABSORBED into this world. Just wonderful. But in my humble opinion, not Scorsese's best work. "King of Comedy" holds that honor.
perfection. absolutley loved the narration and the acting was terrific. Tommy was definitely my favorite character, and Joe Pesci did a fucking fantastic job as his role. never knew this story was based on a real events until the nice intro at the beginning. another Scorsese masterpiece.
Goodfellas always feels so insanely long, so much happens in it and so much time passes. i can never finish it in one sitting
You could watch this a hundred times and still struggle to take it all the details in.
When a diretor such as Martin Scorsese has made so many great films, it's easy to get into arguments over which one is the best, but for me it's an easy pick and the winner is Goodfellas. http://eddieonfilm.blogspot.com/2009/09/as-far-back-as-i-can-remember-i-always.html
