this was a beautifully filmed documentary (not sure why anyone would want to remake it) but it was terribly boring. the idea was interesting/good but nothing happened. nothing interesting was talked about. I mean I'll try to watch it again in a few years but I just wasn't impressed besides the cinematography (which was beautiful).
This movie brought up a lot of questions in my mind about how women survive when faced with historical roles they personally do not espouse, how people cope with aging and changes in their life, how families cope with tragedy and mental illness (it's clear that these two were almost absolutely abandoned by theirs), the stigma of depression... As the saying goes, "There but for the grace of God..."
Despite all the times I had heard about Grey Gardens, I wasn't aware that it was a documentary. Big Edie & Lil' Edie were quite the pair of characters, and their eccentric living environment and grocery list of regrets was very endearing and entertaining to watch. Big Edie made me both laugh and want to cover my eyes to keep from getting emotional, she was such a cute ol' firecracker. And lil' Edie? Well, she just is
Facinating documentary which reveals the eccentric world of the Beales OF Grey Gardens a real eccentric couple and relative of Jackie Onassis. The Maysle Brothers really give the film heart and by the end your totally won over by these two ladies
Highly recommended. The Maysles use to ask questions voice-over and let the Beales do the show. Edith and Edie Beale are not the most interesting people in the world but I can't deny they are...special to say the least. Also interesting how Edie Beale became, thanks to this documentary, one of the many idols of the gay community. I sure would have appreciated the Bouvier family's point of view about Edith and Edith.
I first saw it when it premiered art the New York Film Festiavl. I shall never forget the sight of Little Edie standing up in the box and getting the Standing O of all time. The Maysles struck gold when they found these two remarkable women (and Jerry too) and the reverberations of their work with them continue to this very day.
A film about a lot of things and certainly 2 larger than life personalities, but what I will always remember and cherish about this film is ultimately the humanity in these women. We see it through their dislikes, arguments and insecurities, but most of all through the connection they have to each other, for better or worse.
