This is a modern day masterpiece. Roger Ebert said it best, it’s so effortless and so easy going you don’t realize how good it is until you see it a few more times… not a lot of films age so well and I think this will be seen as a classic in the years to come.
Part Bill Murray vehicle, part light-hearted comedy, part Twilight Zonesque character study/morality tale, part existential/spiritual thesis… it has a lot to say about human nature and how we should appreciate the everyday and appreciate the relationships we have with others… even the casual strangers.
I agree with MARQ.. I hope Criterion comes out with a special edition …maybe in about 10-20 years.

“When Chekhov saw the long winter, he saw a winter bleak and dark and bereft of hope. Yet we know that winter is just another step in the cycle of life. But standing here among the people of Punxsutawney and basking in the of warmth of their hearths and hearts, I couldn’t imagine a better fate than a long and lustrous winter."
The end of a perfect day. Sweet redemption. You tell me why Bill Murray was not given an oscar for this warm, rich, bright and superbly written comedy—I don’t know.
