From the comments here, I may be one of the few who likes Part II more than Part I
While the first film serves mainly as plot, it is not until this film that we get character. Several parts of the film are reminiscent to another well-know film shot in Latin America: Aguirre the Wrath of God. This film acts more introspectively and shows us the man as he struggles and tries to maintain his men in order. I feel this film is a bit weaker than the first part. Maybe it could have been a bit shorter.
Kind of boring for such a powerful subject.
Che's death scene is a work of art! It led me to tears..
I can see why many viewers would prefer Part 1, which is more visceral, and has a greater reliance on conventional narrative development; but what I like about Part 2 is the sustained feeling of uncertainty & futility. The exaggeration of time passing through the general lack of on-screen action communicates the ineffectiveness of the Guerrilla campaign and the general sadness & solitude of Che's crumbling existence.
It's too easy to say this is the weaker half. It isn't as face paced and action packed but that's because it's a hell of a lot more tragic. I found this film to linger on with me for days and days - it captures an interesting struggle where nothing ever got generated in a fresh fashion. The scene between Che and the guard at the end is utterly fantastic. CHE as a whole has really made me rethink Soderbergh as an auteur.
This part is definitively not as good as the first one.
It is necessary watching if you need to round Che's character, but I think a long but single feature film could have been achieved by trimming all the unnecessary fat from both films, specially this one.
I did not find Che II quite as gripping as Che I although I still reckon it is a good film. The problem may have been that the first part of Che’s life had plenty of growth and direction and, hence, so did Che I. The second part of his life was sloppier — fighting in the back end of nowhere with people who were not that interested. So Che II was sloppier. Still highly recommend both films (along with the related Motorcycle Diaries). Che was probably not the towering figure that modern media made him, but his life was important for that period of history. These films do him justice.
