House of Sober Second Thought

An original adaptation, full of novel ideas, brilliantly scored, and above all brilliant in its cinematography. The performances, however, are unengaging. And the text is severely & eccentrically abridged (it isn’t fidelity to the play that stretches the running time past two hours). The Facets subtitles are crap -- mistimed, misspelled, or just missing. The Kozinstev Lear is better.

The Facets DVD edition has terrible subtitles.

Possibly the best Shakespeare film adaptation I have seen...the only one that comes to mind as perhaps topping it is Branagh's Henry V.
