Yeah, I wasn't a fan of it either, you're not the only one.
The saddest, angriest, most unsettling and most despairing film I have seen in some time. And yet, I have not seen a better film about interconnected lives. These characters are all emotionally damaged beyond repair and are willing to sink into the lowest depths of human nature to achieve happiness.
Although the acting was quite good (Hoffman was excellent), and it had a few funny moments, I found the paedophilia theme to be absolutely abhorrent, and it in fact ruined the entire film for me. The sexualization of children is not something to be taken lightly, period. It's very easy to extrapolate from the film that director Solondz probably doesn't have kids himself. What a juvenile piece of garbage
By far the most uncomfortable American film ever made, brilliant and awkward in equal amount, a film that we're not supposed to find funny, but which we cannot stop laughing at.
Not a favourite of mine by any means, but still a very clever and funny film. Incredibly well-written material, handled with finesse by the ensemble cast.
Probably my favorite film of all times... just saw another one that sort of reminded me of it... Less dark - Hungry Years by Isaak James.
'would you f*** me?', 'no id jerk off'. i absolutely laughed my ass off. im not sure i was supposed to but a brilliant dark and creepy film none the less.
A few scenes were tough to get through but overall it's an intelligent film on the darker (while still remaining hopeful) side of humanity.
explores heavy themes with subtlety and humour - plenty of fierce returns for winding tension
One absolutely disappointing film, static characters without dimension... to me it is unclear how this is supposed to fit in the genre "black comedy", considering the fact that there is absolutely no humor in it, only artificial dialogues. I think this movie aimed at presenting a shocking picture of American society, but it lacked in two quite important points - realism and logic
A masterpiece that is so many things in one that it is beyond impressive that Solandz could pull it off.
One of the greatest films of the last 20 years is also one of the most underrated; most likely for its frank subject matter. People who can handle it are in for a masterful blending of comedy and drama, pulling back the curtain on suburbia more than American Beauty, The Ice Storm, and Blue Velvet combined, with a great cast at the top of their game.
